The Borno State Police Command has debunked claims circulating on WhatsApp that a viral video showing two girls being flogged depicts an Islamiyyah school in Maiduguri where Sharia punishment was being administered.
In a statement issued Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nahum Daso, the command said while the video is real, the narrative attached to it is false.
Daso said, “Let us separate the facts from the narrative.
“This was NOT an Islamiyyah school, and the man in the video was NOT an Islamic teacher administering Sharia punishment.”
According to the police, the incident occurred around March 2025 in a private residence in Maiduguri.
The command stated that the two girls had entered the compound to pick mangoes before they were allegedly abused.
Daso said the matter was investigated, suspects were arrested, and the case was subsequently prosecuted.
The PPRO also dismissed claims that children in Borno are left without legal protection.
He noted that Borno State has a Child Protection Law.
On January 10, 2022, Governor Babagana Zulum signed the Borno State Child Protection Bill into law.
UNICEF had commended the development, noting that Borno became the 29th state in Nigeria to domesticate the Child Rights Act.
The law provides a legal framework for protecting children from various forms of abuse and violations of their rights.
Daso urged the public to condemn child abuse wherever it occurs but to resist attaching false religious, ethnic or political narratives to incidents.
“Not everything that trends is true. And not everything that is true needs a false narrative to make it important,” he said.
