Nigeria’s non-oil exports hit $6.1bn

Nigeria’s non-oil export sector recorded a major achievement in 2025, reaching a total value of $6.1 billion, an 11.5 percent increase from the $5.4 billion recorded in 2024. The milestone underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to diversify its economy away from oil dependence and integrate more robustly into global trade networks.

The figures were disclosed by the Executive Director and CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Nonye Ayeni, during her annual progress report and 2026 export outlook briefing in Abuja on Monday.

“The non-oil export sector rose to approximately 6.1 billion U.S. dollars, representing a year-on-year growth of about 11.5 percent over and above the 5.4 billion U.S. dollars recorded in 2024,” Ayeni said.

She added that the achievement represents the highest value ever recorded for Nigeria’s formal non-oil exports since the NEPC was established nearly 50 years ago, surpassing last year’s record. According to Ayeni, the increase reflects both growth in export volumes and wider market access for Nigerian products.

Total non-oil exports in 2025 reached 8.02 million metric tonnes, up from 7.29 million metric tonnes in 2024, marking a 10 percent rise. Nigeria exported 281 non-oil products during the year, indicating a shift toward value addition and broader participation in international trade. Export activity spanned agriculture, processed goods, and solid minerals, with volume increases suggesting improvements in production and stronger supply chain integration.

Despite the robust formal-sector growth, NEPC noted that a significant portion of trade still occurs informally across Nigeria’s land borders, limiting the full capture of export potential.

The National Bureau of Statistics reported that non-oil exports reached N9.2 trillion in the first nine months of 2025, up 48 percent from N6.2 trillion in the same period of 2024. Analysts attribute the increase partly to the continued impact of the 2023 naira devaluation on Nigeria’s external trade profile.

Earlier in the year, NEPC had reported that non-oil exports reached $3.225 billion in the first half of 2025, a 19.6 percent rise from $2.696 billion in the same period of 2024, signaling consistent growth throughout the year and positioning Nigeria’s non-oil sector for a promising 2026.
