Nigeria recorded a landmark victory in their maiden appearance at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, stunning China 93-88 in a thrilling opening game that defied all pre-tournament predictions.
The historic win marked Nigeria’s first-ever triumph at the global youth championship, sending a strong message that the team is not just in Madrid to make up the numbers. Despite being considered underdogs, the young Nigerian side showed immense character and composure to outlast their more fancied opponents.
Rising star Nora Ezike was the standout performer, delivering a sensational debut in national colors. The dynamic guard racked up 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals in a commanding all-around display that proved decisive.
“I’m incredibly excited—it’s an honor to represent my country,” Ezike said after the game. “Getting this first win feels amazing. We stuck to our game plan, played tough defense, supported each other, and stayed composed when it mattered most.”
Ezike, who watched D’Tigress make history at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Nigeria became the first African women’s team to win two games and reach the quarter-finals, said the Olympic team inspired her performance.
“I was in Paris with my family and watched Nigeria’s games. That experience really motivated me,” she added.
The victory not only sets a positive tone for Nigeria’s campaign but also echoes the growing influence of Nigerian women’s basketball on the global stage. With more challenges ahead, the team will now aim to build on this memorable debut and continue their march into the tournament’s record books.
