Commissioner of Police Umar Ahmed Chuso has assumed duty as the 24th Commissioner of Police in Gombe State, taking over from CP Bello Yahaya, who has been redeployed to the Police Staff College, Jos, by the Inspector-General of Police.

In his first address after assuming office, Mr Chuso called for sustained cooperation from residents and key stakeholders, stressing that effective policing in the state would depend on strong partnerships with communities. He identified community-based and intelligence-led policing as priority strategies for tackling crime and improving police-public relations across Gombe.

According to a statement issued by the command’s public relations officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the new police commissioner said his administration would focus on proactive crime prevention, timely intelligence gathering and closer engagement with traditional institutions, religious bodies, youth groups and community leaders to enhance public safety.

He explained that Mr Chuso, an indigene of Sokoto South Local Government Area of Sokoto State, holds a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He joined the Nigeria Police Force in June 1994 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and received professional training at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano.

Before his posting to Gombe, he served as Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State. He also held positions as Deputy Commandant of the Police Staff College, Jos, and Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and Criminal Investigation Department in Kano State. His career profile further includes postings as Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, Delta State, and pioneer Area Commander, Argungu, Kebbi State, among others.

He has attended several professional courses locally and abroad, including leadership, detective, tactical command and human rights programmes, and is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Police Studies.

Mr Chuso reassured residents of his commitment to the protection of lives and property, pledging to sustain peace and security in the state through collaboration, accountability and professionalism within the command.
