As part of efforts to curb the menace of drug abuse, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, has called for a robust partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service and other relevant stakeholders in fighting drug trafficking in the country.

The Apapa Commander of NDLEA, Mr. Noah Ndutong, made the call on Wednesday in Apapa during the grand finale of 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

As an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse, June 26 every year has been set aside as International Day again Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and this year has been themed: “The evidence is clear, invest in prevention.”

However, Ndutong reiterated that with joint efforts from other stakeholders, the work of NDLEA would be easier.

“The summary of everything I am saying here is that we can’t do without you our stakeholders. There is hardly any family that has not fallen victim of drug abuse in one way or the other, we have all fallen to it,” he said.

The Apapa NDLEA boss warned that the chances of coming out from drugs abuse are always very slim, adding that the menace keeps depleting workforce in the country.

According to him, Nigerians should invest more in preventing drug abuse, saying that preventing drug abuse entails, public enlightenment, sensitisation among others.

He vowed that the agency would drive drug dealers out of business. He hinted that drug dealers won’t enjoy their businesses as they will all spend their time in jail.

He pointed out that drugs are a major contributor to crimes and criminality in the country.

Earlier the Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Babatunde Olomu, said drug abuse hinders national development.

“The Apapa Area Command of the NCS is on the same page with NDLEA and others in the fight against drug abuse. Drug abuse fuels insecurity, among other crimes and together, we can fight drug abuse. So I urge all hands to be on deck to achieve this,” he said.
