The National Executive Council (NEC) has ratified the results of party primary elections conducted nationwide for the selection of qualified candidates vying for various political positions in readiness for the 2027 general elections.

The National Secretary of the party, Hon. Iheanacho Obioma, while presenting the official report of the Labour Party 2026 Primary Elections conducted on Saturday, 30 May 2026, across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stated that the party acted pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act 2026, the Labour Party Constitution 2026 (as amended), and the Labour Party Electoral Guidelines for the 2026 Primary Elections.

He said the Labour Party remained committed throughout the process to the principles of internal democracy, transparency, fairness, inclusiveness and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

“We developed, approved and published the Labour Party Electoral Guidelines for the 2026 Primary Elections to regulate the nomination process and provide clear procedures for aspirants, delegates, electoral officers and party officials.

“We subsequently issued notices for the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms for the various elective offices, thereby providing eligible members the opportunity to seek nomination under the platform of the Labour Party.

“Following the close of nominations, the Labour Party constituted screening committees at both the national and state levels to verify the eligibility and compliance status of all aspirants seeking nomination under the platform of the party for the various elective offices in line with the party constitution and substantive resolutions of the National Convention.

“The screening exercise was conducted successfully, transparently and in accordance with the provisions of the Labour Party Constitution 2026 (as amended) and the Labour Party Electoral Guidelines for the 2026 Primary Elections.

“To ensure fairness, transparency and due process, screening appeal committees were also constituted to receive, hear and make recommendations on appeals arising from the screening exercise. The appeal committees discharged their responsibilities and submitted their reports to the appropriate organs of the party.

“At the conclusion of the screening process and determination of appeals, aspirants who successfully satisfied all the party’s constitutional, statutory and administrative requirements were issued certificates of clearance, signifying their eligibility to participate in the party’s primary elections.”

The National Secretary further stated that, in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the Labour Party Constitution 2026 (as amended), the party adopted both consensus and the direct primary method for the nomination of candidates across different states and constituencies, depending on the circumstances and resolutions reached by stakeholders in the affected jurisdictions.

He said the adoption of either method complied substantially with the requirements of the Electoral Act, party constitution and electoral guidelines.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that primary elections were held for the positions of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Governor (for states where governorship elections will take place in 2027); Senator; Member, House of Representatives; and Member, State House of Assembly.

He also indicated that the exercises were monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), party officials, accredited observers and relevant stakeholders where applicable, including members of the European Union Observation Mission from the Kukah Centre, who observed the exercise in Abia and Anambra states respectively.

“NEC in session is invited to note that reports received from the various electoral committees indicate that the primaries were conducted peacefully, transparently and in substantial compliance with all extant laws, regulations and guidelines governing the nomination of candidates by political parties.”
