In response to the escalating hunger crisis plaguing Nigeria, Lions Club International, District 404B2 Nigeria, has embarked on an ambitious mission to raise N250 million. Their goal is to establish a world-class food bank aimed at alleviating hunger in Lagos, a city where millions are grappling with acute hunger and malnutrition due to skyrocketing food prices.

At a recent press conference, newly inaugurated district governor, Tolulope Senbanjo, unveiled this bold initiative, which is a cornerstone of his service agenda for the 2024–2025 year. Senbanjo emphasized the urgency of the hunger crisis, describing it as a unique and pressing need within local communities. He outlined the club’s comprehensive plan to mobilize resources and tackle food insecurity head-on.

“The establishment of this food bank is a deliberate step to cushion the effects of hunger in our community.  Our goal is to serve at least 100,000 people annually, providing a sustainable means of living to vulnerable individuals in underserved areas across Lagos,” Senbanjo said.

The initiative will unfold in three stages, each designed to ensure the food bank reaches the most indigent and low-income earners, thereby maximizing its impact on society. Senbanjo called for partnerships and collaboration from government entities, corporate organizations and private individuals to make the vision a reality.

“Lions Club aims to raise funds locally to support the hunger crisis and provide relief to those affected. While food banks can significantly reduce food insecurity in Nigeria, it is also crucial to empower families and invest in them,” he explained.

Senbanjo highlighted that investing in adequate nutrition is one of the most cost-effective development actions. Yet, food security in Nigeria is often overlooked as a catalyst for economic development or a fundamental right.

The food bank will operate in three phases, tailored to address the specific needs of different communities. One innovative aspect of the project includes the creation of meal vouchers for school children. These vouchers will be redeemable at local vendors, ensuring that children receive nutritious meals at school.

Senbanjo, the youngest district governor ever elected in Africa, draws inspiration from the mantra “not too young to serve.” He shared his motivation and guiding principles, urging fellow Lions and supporters to join his mission to make a significant difference in society.

Senbanjo said: “I decided to stand for something in our society. I believe you, my fellow Lions and listeners worldwide, will find a place in your hearts to support my mission. It all starts with the basic things that can change our failing culture.”

He further emphasized the importance of being good citizens, conscious of civic and social duties and, above all, our shared humanity. “At the Lions Club, we believe in dedicating our time, treasure and talents to serving our immediate communities,” he added.

Past district governor Kayode Oshinuga provided an overview of Lions Club International’s core activities, known as the Five pillars of service: Vision, hunger, diabetes, cancer and environment. He highlighted the organization’s track record of humanitarian projects, including world-class eye centers, diabetic centers and cancer treatment facilities across Nigeria, supported by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).

Oshinuga noted that for every project undertaken, the Lions Club leverages a large network of volunteers and partners to improve health and well-being, strengthen communities and support those in need through humanitarian services and grants that have a global impact.

With this ambitious food bank project, Lions Club International District 404B2 Nigeria is poised to make a lasting impact on food security in Lagos, demonstrating the power of community-driven initiatives to address critical societal issues.
