Law different from activism – Deji Adeyanju advises new lawyers

Deji Adeyanju

Lawyer and Principal Partner, Deji Adeyanju & Partners, Barr. Deji Adeyanju has urged newly-inducted lawyers to shun stubbornness if they hope to be successful in the profession.

He gave the piece of advice in a Facebook post on Wednesday, a day after the Call to Bar ceremony in Abuja for 4,437 new lawyers.

According to Adeyanju, to become successful, a lawyer must know when to negotiate, be quiet, or raise the alarm.

However, the activist-turned-lawyer said, stubbornness is not a good trait for a lawyer.

He said, “To all the new wigs, welcome to the largest bar in Africa. There’s money in this profession but you must put in the work.

“In this profession, contact is money. Know when to negotiate, when to be silent and when to shout.

“Stubbornness will not make you a good lawyer. Even as a comrade, I have had to learn the bitter lesson that law is different from activism.”
