I performed with my newborn in my pouch under Ikeja bridge – Kenny St Brown, Musician

Kenny St Brown recently authored a book. She’s popularly known as a hip-hop, funky gospel singer. Her  dance steps, costumes and back ups attest to that.  But talking to Sunday Sun recently, she describes herself as an author, politician, artiste, preacher, minister of  the gospel, foodie, a good Nigerian and a lover of Nigeria. She also talked about her firsts.

First album

It’s a praise song titled, You are worthy worthy. That was in 1998.

First producer

My first ever producer was Sammy Okposo. The studio was Klink Studio, Surulere.

First stage performance

It was the same 1998 at Shell Hall, Muson Centre. It was the most prestigious hall at that time. I had stage fright and there was trial and error. My band then was from House On The Rock choir band. It was Sammy Okposo that arranged the church band for me.

First musical video

It was also You are worthy worthy released in December 1998. My brother Kenny Ogungbe had done all the stress as everything was arranged, produced and directed by him. All I needed to do was just to make myself available with my costumes and dancers. It was stress-free, because my brother bankrolled everything too.

First musical trip abroad

That was to Johannesburg, South Africa for the CORA awards in December 2003. I was nominated for the best artist in West Africa award and I also opened the show with the first appearance.

First car

It was a white Nissan Bluebird I bought in 1999 and it has been disposed off a long time ago.

First salary

It was at Union Bank in 1998 when I was doing my vacation job and I was in year two in the university. Precisely Union Bank, Isolo branch. It was like 8 or 10k at that time but was big money then. I spent it on my wardrobe and in our house nobody cared what you did with your salary.

First child

She was born on April 11, 2002 in the evening. She is 15 now going to 16.

First stage performance as a mother

It was 10 days after I delivered. I put my baby in a pouch,  and I held the microphone. It was under the bridge at  Ikeja during  Sonny Okosun’s Peace Concert  in April 2003.

First book

Stop! Turn  Around. That’s my first book. It just came out.
