From Abdulrazaq Mungadi, Gombe
The Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency (GOSEPA) has raised concern over the growing incidence of indiscriminate waste disposal and open defecation within Gombe metropolis, issuing a one-week ultimatum to residents, traders, and food vendors to comply with environmental sanitation laws.
The Executive Secretary of the agency, Auwalu Baba Jada, disclosed this during an interview with newsmen, where he outlined the agency’s observations and enforcement stance.
According to Jada, GOSEPA has recorded widespread cases of improper refuse disposal across several parts of the city, particularly along major roads and inside drainage channels. He noted that the practice, which is common among some traders and food vendors, has continued to undermine the state’s environmental sanitation efforts.
He explained that dumping waste into drainage systems leads to blockages that often result in flooding, environmental degradation, and heightened public health risks.

He emphasized that the present administration would not condone actions that compromise environmental standards, stressing that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility requiring the cooperation of all residents.
He also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing sanitation regulations and ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for the people of Gombe state.
