Ibrahim Lawal, a Nigerian artist and chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Adire sector of the National Union of Textile, Garments and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, has made a name for himself on the global stage.
Recently, he was appointed Vice President of the Nigerian chapter of the Organisation for the Development of Arts in Africa (ODEVAA).
This appointment is a testament to his dedication to promoting African art and culture.
Lawal’s journey to the top began with his passion for Adire, a traditional Nigerian textile art. As Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the National Union of Textile Garments Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (Adire Sector),
He has been instrumental in promoting the art form and supporting local artisans.
Recently, the Semaine internationale de l’artisanat de Grand-Bassam in Ivory Coast provided a platform for Lawal and other artisans from Nigeria to showcase their artistic skills and connect with other artisans from across Africa.
The event, organised by the Ivory Coast chapter of ODEVAA, featured a diverse range of artisans showcasing their work, including traditional crafts, textiles, wood carvings, and stunning jewelry.
It was at this global stage that he wormed himself to the hearts of many, using his artistic prowess to send a message to the global community. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed as he was at the venue appointed the Vice President of ODEVAA Nigeria.
Lawal’s appointment as Vice President of the Pan African group has led to new partnerships and opportunities. He recently paid a courtesy visit to the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr Idris Aregbe, to discuss ways of promoting Adire and other indigenous fabrics.
Aregbe assured the delegation of the ministry’s support, emphasising the Lagos State government’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage and empowering artisans.
Lawal’s vision for the Adire sector is ambitious. He plans to build the capacity of members through training, organize the Adire carnival to promote tourism and economic growth, and participate in international exhibitions to gain global recognition.
He also aims to create a database to enhance job security and build a strong organisational structure.
Ibrahim Lawal’s story is an inspiration to artisans and entrepreneurs across Africa.

With the support of the Lagos State government and stakeholders in the sector, Lawal’s vision for the Adire sector is set to become a reality.
Part of his vision was brought to the fore recently when he visited the executive chairmen of two Local Council Development Areas in his community- Coker-Aguda and Itire Ikate LCDAs. His visit to the Chairman of Coker-Aguda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon Azeez Ogidan, was rewarding.
During the meeting, Comrade Ibrahim Lawal expressed the sector’s determination to key into the vibrant sector by seeking collaborations from both the state and local government.
He highlighted the need to improve the Adire production site, insisting that transforming the production site would ensure better working conditions and increased productivity.
Lawal also announced plans to build the capacity of members through training, noting that the national textile union’s upcoming training programme aims to equip Adire artisans with new skills and knowledge to compete globally.
“It is our plan to organize the Adire carnival to showcase the cultural significance and beauty of Adire, promoting tourism and economic growth in the area”, he stated
In his remarks, Hon.Ogidan also expressed his administration’s commitment to partnering with the Adire sector to promote the industry.
He said Coker- Aguda LCDA would leverage its resources and expertise to support local artisans.
Head of the Tourism Unit, Mrs. Thelma Abidemi Madume, also highlighted the potential for Adire to be incorporated into tourism initiatives, emphasising its cultural significance and potential to attract visitors.
Also the Executive Chairman of Itire-Ikate LCDA, Hon. Oluwafemi Odunayo Daniel, visited the proposed Itire Ikate Adire hub.
The Itire- Ikate LCDA boss also expressed his commitment to establishing an International Adire Hub in Itire-Ikate LCDA.
He said such project would provide artisans and entrepreneurs with an enabling environment to enhance their craft and gain wider market access.
Lawal expressed gratitude to the LCDA boss, applauding his dedication, foresight, and commitment to grassroots development.
He noted that the establishment of the International Adire Hub would be a testament to the chairman’s sincere efforts and purposeful leadership.
