From Lagos to Manchester: Diran Aderinto’s after shift captures life after work

What happens after the day’s work is over? What stories emerge in the quiet moments between leaving work and coming home? These questions sparked the compelling photographic exhibition After Shift by Nigerian multidisciplinary artist Diran Aderinto. Through a body of carefully observed images, Aderinto transforms the everyday rituals of commuting, waiting, and returning home into a poignant reflection on labour and contemporary life.

Presented in partnership with the Black Migrant Creatives Club, After Shift was held at an exhibition space on Girton Street in Salford, Manchester, on March 14 and 15, 2026, attracting more than 80 visitors over two days.

Aderinto’s photographs invite us to pause and appreciate the moments that frequently go unnoticed: silent bus stops, deserted streets, solitary walks home, and subtle breaks in our everyday routines. Instead of highlighting dramatic scenes, this series encourages us to reflect on the emotional tapestry of daily life. It reveals how these seemingly ordinary narratives are intertwined with profound themes such as resilience, loneliness, adaptation, and connection, stories that are often overlooked by mainstream media, yet are rich in meaning and frequently escape the limelight.

For Aderinto, these reflections capture something of the essence of the project. After Shift wasn’t merely a photographic display; it was a space for contemplation of mental and emotional well-being, relaxation, and the lasting effects of work on contemporary life. Conversations flowed effortlessly, touching on work, migration, isolation, resilience, care, and healing, both as personal experiences and broader societal themes.

Aderinto, originally from Lagos and now based in Manchester, works in photography, moving image, sound, and installation. He often examines concepts of movement, memory, labour, identity, and belonging, and how individuals negotiate their social and cultural environments. In After Shift, these ideas are realised through the city, the rhythm of nighttime life, and the journey home as both a physical and emotional passage.

What distinguishes this exhibition is its ability to turn the ordinary into something meaningful. The photographs are not intended to overwhelm; instead, they invite viewers to pause and reflect. A bus stop slightly removed from the crowd, a solitary walk home, or a moment of quiet reflection can reveal the significance of experiences often overlooked.

Diran Aderinto shares the stories behind After Shift with visitors.

What stayed with attendees after the exhibition was more than a series of pictures. It sparked a conversation that united strangers and allowed attendees to reflect on how people navigate the weight of the everyday. In a fast, high-pressure world where everything is about speed and success, After Shift was an opportunity to pause, slow down, and simply be present with something and with one another.

Diran Aderinto’s exhibition is deeply contemplative, demonstrating how contemporary photography can do more than simply capture reality. Through this work, he shows how photography can connect with audiences and encourage reflection on everyday life. What is also important to remember is that these silent moments, which tend to remain relegated to the background, actually carry meaning of their own.

In the end, the exhibition shows us the stories that emerge from these quiet moments. Through After Shift, Aderinto brings those stories into focus.
