First Lady of Nigeria Oluremi Tinubu, commissioned the National Assembly Christian Chapel on Sunday, declaring it a symbol that while legislators serve the people, they remain “ultimately accountable to God.”
The event drew dignitaries including former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon and former House Speaker Yakubu Dogara. Mrs. Tinubu urged the chapel to foster “humility in leadership, courage in decision-making and compassion in service,” praying, “May Nigeria continue to flourish as we collectively seek the face of God in worship and prayers in this Chapel in Jesus Name.”
She added, “I believe the National Assembly is ready to pray Nigeria into greatness.”
General Gowon called on lawmakers to prioritize the nation’s interest, rooted in God’s law of loving God and neighbors. “Love must be used to ensure the unity and continuity of this nation,” he said. “God loves us all and we must love one another.”
Dogara, who initiated the project during the 8th Assembly, described the chapel as a hub for repentance, national healing, and progress. “Let it be a centre for unity and it should all be about Jesus. The only thing that can keep us here is unity.”
Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, urging Nigerians to focus on character over religion. “While men legislate for a season, God legislates for eternity. Lawmaking must be guided in conscience, anchored in righteousness and established through prayers.”
He added, “When a nation honours and trusts God, God establishes their future. The strength of a nation lies not only in institutions but in their recognition of God.”
