To enhance efficiency and eliminate bottlenecks in passport processing for top government officials, the Federal Government has commissioned a newly established Passport Front Office exclusively designed for senior public officers and other specially designated individuals.
The specialised facility was unveiled on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in response to the long-standing difficulties faced by high-ranking officials who previously endured delays and queues at regular passport centres.
Speaking at the commissioning, Dr. Tunji-Ojo decried the inefficiencies of the past system that often forced senior public officers to neglect official responsibilities in pursuit of travel documents.
“Before now, many top-level public servants had to abandon their official duties and endure long queues at standard passport offices,” the minister noted. “It became clear that for us to serve the nation more effectively, we must also serve those tasked with its leadership more efficiently.”
He praised the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) for its professionalism and lauded the ministry’s collaboration with key partners, including Iris Smart Technologies, which provided the cutting-edge digital infrastructure supporting the new front office.
“This facility sets a new benchmark for excellence and will significantly improve access, reduce waiting time, and elevate the overall passport service delivery standard,” Tunji-Ojo said.
He described the initiative as part of broader institutional reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at improving governance and public service delivery.
“When we came in, it was shocking to realise that the Ministry of Interior and the NIS had no dedicated passport facility for public officials. Today marks a turning point as we begin to bridge that gap and set a new course for service delivery in our nation,” he added. Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, underscored the importance of the facility in supporting national service.
“This is a very significant occasion as the Passport Front Office serves as a dedicated, high-priority channel for the dignified and efficient processing of passport applications for key public officials whose mobility is crucial to national service,” she said.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by the Minister of Water Resources, Professor Joseph Utsev; Controller-Generals of the various agencies under the Ministry of Interior; representatives from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment; and senior officers from the Nigerian Immigration Service, among others.
