Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a commanding 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring after 15 minutes, converting from Riccardo Calafiori’s assist before Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage eight minutes later.
Martin Ødegaard made it 3-0 four minutes after half-time, finishing from Ben White’s assist as Arsenal maintained control and left Coventry facing a difficult return to the top flight.
The result marked a significant milestone for Mikel Arteta, who recorded his 150th Premier League victory as Arsenal manager in his 249th game. Only four managers Pep Guardiola, José Mourinho, Jürgen Klopp and Sir Alex Ferguson had previously reached 150 wins in fewer than 250 matches.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said Arsenal had played with “swagger”, adding that the 3-0 scoreline did not fully reflect their superiority.
For Frank Lampard and Coventry, the night offered a sharp reminder of the challenge ahead after 25 years away from the Premier League.
The Sky Blues failed to score despite creating late opportunities, while Arsenal began their title defence with three points and an emphatic statement of intent.
