Former Kaduna Central senator Shehu Sani has expressed sympathy with Senator Salihu Mustapha over his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying he understands the pressures senators face when they fall out with their governors.
Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District, has been at the centre of political realignments in Kwara ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reacting to Mustapha’s defection on his verified X handle on Friday, Sani said he was unhappy about the development but acknowledged that the Kwara Central senator had the right to make his political choice.
“I’m not happy to hear that Senator Salihu Mustapha from Kwara has left the APC to the PDP; but who am I to question his decision when I know what happens whenever a Senator goes into a conflict with his Governor,” Sani wrote.

He added that Mustapha was experiencing a situation similar to what he had personally gone through in the past under the embattled ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
“He is just experiencing what I have been through in the past,” the 2027 APC candidate for Kaduna Central said.
Sani wished Mustapha success in his new political path, saying history would ultimately determine whether the decision was right or wrong.
“I wish him success in his chosen path. Posterity will vindicate him if he is right,” he added.
