• Directs NIWA, NEMA to work with Sokoto govt. to prevent recurrence
President Bola Tinubu has ordered a review of safety measures on waterways following a boat accident in Gorau Community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, which claimed several lives and left others missing.
The President directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to work with the Sokoto State Government to strengthen safety standards and take urgent measures to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy.
Tinubu gave the directive while expressing deep sorrow over the accident, which he described as a tragedy.
The directive is expected to place renewed focus on the enforcement of safety regulations governing inland water transportation, particularly in communities where boats are a major means of movement.
He also commended emergency responders and local authorities for their swift rescue and recovery efforts, while directing the relevant federal agencies to ensure that safety regulations on the nation’s waterways are strictly enforced.
According to a statement on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President also extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as the government and people of Sokoto State.

“The news of this boat mishap deeply saddens me. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families during this difficult time,” Tinubu said.
“I pray that God grants the departed eternal rest and gives their loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”
The President further directed the agencies to work closely with the Sokoto authorities to strengthen preventive measures and ensure compliance with established safety requirements on waterways.
Tinubu also prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the accident and assured the people of Sokoto State of the Federal Government’s support during the trying period.
