A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Hashim, has said reconciliation within the party remains achievable despite the recent factional National Convention held in Abuja.

The convention, reportedly backed by Nyesom Wike, has further deepened existing divisions within the opposition party, raising fresh concerns over its unity and electoral strength ahead of future contests.

Reacting to the developments, Hashim stressed that the PDP cannot afford to sideline any significant bloc within its structure, warning that persistent internal rifts could erode its credibility as a viable opposition force.

“Nothing has changed to alter the necessity for reconciliation and unity,” he said, urging leaders of the rival factions to return to the negotiating table. He emphasised the importance of harmonising party structures in accordance with prior agreements to restore cohesion.

Hashim pointed out that ongoing legal proceedings at the Ibadan Division of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court offer constitutional pathways for resolving the crisis. He added that a consent judgment remains a realistic outcome if stakeholders demonstrate the political will to reach a compromise.

The aspirant further highlighted the need to preserve the PDP’s founding ideals as an inclusive political platform, cautioning against actions that could deepen factional divides. He called on party leaders to prioritise unity over individual or group interests.

According to him, reconciliation efforts should now focus on addressing structural inconsistencies within the party, including the existence of parallel national working committees and conflicting state structures resulting from separate congresses.

The PDP has, in recent times, been embroiled in internal disputes that have raised doubts about its cohesion and readiness for upcoming elections. However, Hashim expressed optimism that, through sincere dialogue and compromise, the party can overcome its current challenges and regain stability.
