First Lady of Nigeria Oluremi Tinubu has called on Africans to preserve their rich cultural heritage, strengthen unity across the continent and the diaspora, and invest more in the education, empowerment and well-being of their people.
Mrs Tinubu made the call in her message marking the 2026 International Day for People of African Descent, commemorated on August 31.
The First Lady said the occasion, with the theme, “People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development”, provided an opportunity to celebrate the rich heritage and remarkable contributions of people of African descent to the progress of humanity.
She also said the day should serve as a reminder of the need for renewed commitment to the protection of human rights and the creation of opportunities that would enable every individual to realise their full potential.
“Today, as we commemorate the International Day for People of African Descent 2026, we celebrate the rich heritage and remarkable contributions of people of African descent to the progress of humanity,” she said.

The First Lady stressed that Africans must remain deliberate about safeguarding their identity and cultural values while building stronger bonds among people of African descent across the world.
“As Africans, we must continue to preserve our rich cultural heritage, strengthen unity across the continent and the diaspora, and invest in the education, empowerment, and well-being of our people,” Mrs Tinubu said.
She congratulated people of African descent across the world on the occasion and wished them a memorable International Day for People of African Descent.
