Commissioner rates SUMAS high in medical, applied sciences education

…As institution holds Open Day, receives secondary School science students

The Enugu State Commissioner for Education Prof. Ndubueze Mbah has rated the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) Igbo-Eno, Enugu State high in the field of medical and applied sciences university education in the country.

Mbah spoke on Friday during the university’s first Open Day and said that hig quality infrastructures and the state-of-the-art equipment in classrooms, laboratories, hostels, medical centre, and library, among  others, as well as well trained personnel and experienced management team in the institution placed it as one of the best medical and applied sciences university in the state and in the country.

He assured the school management that the state government would  continue to support the university with needed educational interventions to enable them continue to build in the existing standards and improve where necessary.

“I’m glad with the morden state-of-the-art equipments in the laboratories, classrooms hostels, library and medical centre of SUMAS curtesy of the Enugu State government.

“This no doubt has positioned the university as one of the best in the country, as well as makes it a centre of excellence in medical and applied  science education in the country.

“The state government will continue to support the university with needed educational interventions to enable it realise the aims of establishing it which  bordered on increase access to quality engineering, natural and applied sciences, allied health sciences and medical university education and provision of affordable health care service delivery,” he said.

The commissioner who was represented by Mrs. Juliana Ugwu, Education Supervisor in Enugu North Senatorial District urged prospective students of the University, parents and guardians to use the opportunity of the Open Day to go round the university and see for themselves state-of-the-art edifices, morden teaching and learning equipments in Faculties, departments, laboratories and the University’s medical centre.

Earlier in a remark, Prof James Ogbonna, the Vice-Chancellor of SUMAS  said that the Open Day was a day  set aside by the university to allow prospecting students and general public  to come and know what the institution  have and offer.

“This university was founded with the aim of providing the youths in the state and beyond easy access to quality allied health sciences and medical university education, provide accessible, quality and affordable health care services delivery, among other things.

“The Open Day is a wonderful opportunity for prospective students especially science students in the state and general public to visit and get acquainted with the programmes/courses and services we offer in the university, ask questions and receive answers immediately,” he said.

Speaking further the pioneer VC said that the university which was established by the Enugu State Government as a second Enugu state owned University on the 12th day of April 2022 is running 23 programs approved by the National University Commission, (NUC).

“The 23 programmes are spread into six faculties, namely; Faculty of Clinical Medicine and Dentistry, Faculty of Basic Medicine, Faculty of Allied Health Science, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty Of Engineering and the Built Environment, and Faculty Of Natural and Applied Sciences.

“The university has 19 state-of-the-art laboratories, a digital library, well-equipped engineering workshops, 24-hour solar-powered electricity, internet facilities, 10 industrial size water boreholes,  among others that make the university habitable as well as enhance teaching and learning.

On the institution’s medical services,  the VC said “The outpatient unit of the Teaching Hospital with 7 departments has almost been completed while the construction of the Inpatient department has started. In addition, the university had an ultra-modern 120-bedded Medical Centre operating on 24-hour services, now being used as a temporary site for the Teaching Hospital.”

Over 500 Secondary school science students from ten different schools in Nsukka zone how attended the Open Day were conducted around the university’s laboratories, faculties and departments, hostels, classrooms, medical centre, etc and they were educated on the history and mission of the university, as well as encouraged them to consider the university when they will be seeking admission for university education.

In an interview with some of the visiting students, they expressed appreciation to the university management for educating on the programms and services of the University and expressed their willingness to seek and gain admission in the institution.

Mr. Anselm Onah, Registrar, Mr. Emeka Ozoadibe, Bursar, and Mrs. Asogwa Oluchi, Public Relations Officer, Dr. Abugu Justus, Acting CMD SUMAS Medical Centre, Prof Cletus Eze, Chairman Open Day planning Committee were among those present during the event.
