Bayelsa: Uneasy calm as police chief orders enforcement of Operation Velvet

There is anxiety in Bayelsa State following a notice served by the Bayelsa State Police Command on the commencement of the firm enforcement of Operation Velvet from Thursday, August 27.

The notice, which was served by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Saka Adewale, stated that the Command would ensure firm enforcement and warned motorists to get proper documentation and not violate traffic rules.

According to CP Adewale, the strict and statewide enforcement of Operation “VELVET” is in line with the directive and vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on traffic offenders and the general safety of the public.

He disclosed that the operation would target violations capable of undermining public order and security, including driving unregistered or improperly registered vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles, fake, covered or obscured number plates, and other breaches of extant traffic laws.

‘’To ensure effective enforcement, the Commissioner of Police has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders and all personnel deployed for the operation to take decisive action against violators and ensure that offenders are handled strictly within the ambit of the law.

‘’The CP further directs that the exercise be conducted with the required level of professionalism and respect for the fundamental rights and dignity of members of the public, as no form of extortion, harassment, or intimidation of road users will be tolerated.

‘’Accordingly, motorists and other road users are strongly advised to regularise their documents and ensure full compliance with traffic regulations before the commencement of the exercise.

‘’The Command will not hesitate to take appropriate lawful action against persons found violating the regulations.’’

The CP, while urging members of the public to cooperate with police personnel and support the successful implementation of the operation across the state, reaffirms his commitment to maintaining law and order and protecting lives and property.
