The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has raised the alarm over what it described as persistent abuse of power by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, warning that his actions pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the coalition accused Wike of repeatedly exceeding the limits of his constitutional mandate and interfering in political and institutional affairs beyond his jurisdiction.
The CNG cited the alleged manipulation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed as a glaring example of overreach, raising concerns about the independence of the anti-graft agency.

“The timing and manner of the EFCC’s actions raise serious questions about political interference and the weaponization of state institutions,” the statement said.
The coalition warned that no individual holds a monopoly on power and cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act decisively, noting that unchecked excesses could undermine the credibility of his administration and erode democratic norms.
The group also expressed concern over growing confusion about the locus of power in Nigeria, warning that such ambiguity could destabilize governance.
The CNG urged the EFCC to focus strictly on its statutory mandate and called on civil society, political parties, and citizens to remain vigilant in defending democracy, electoral integrity, and the rule of law.
