Christ the King College Onitsha Old Boys Association, Lagos Branch, recently celebrated the feast of Christ the Universal King (Corpus Christi) in Lagos.
The highlight of the event was a lecture on prostate cancer delivered by Prof Kingsley Ekwueme, a surgeon and consultant urologist, who came all the way from the United Kingdom to grace the occasion.
While delivering the lecture, Ekwueme said that prostate cancer had become one of the biggest killers of men. According to him, the disease is more prevalent in Africa and other third world countries, noting that 1,300,000 people are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually.
He linked the major cause of the disease to hereditary factor as well as wrong life style.
His words, “One of the major causes of prostate cancer is hereditary and if you have somebody in your family who has suffered from it, you are likely going to have it seven years earlier. Men, once they attain the age of 40, they should be going for regular checkups. They should not wait for the symptom to manifest because by then it has become dangerous. Some of the risk factors are obesity, diabetes and high level cholesterol in the body. For now, there is no diet or supplement that can be used to prevent prostate cancer.”
Speaking earlier on the choice of prostate cancer treatment as a topic for the lecture, the vice president/chairman Feast Committee, Chuks Nnalugha, lamented that prostate cancer had become hydra headed to the extent that a lot of men don’t know how to go about it.
He said since one of their old boys had become one of the best in the world in the treatment of the disease, they decided to invite him to come and give expert lecture on it.
The event also witnessed presentation of awards to some of the old boys who had distinguished themselves in different areas of human endeavour.
