Bishop of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Diocese of Calabar, Rt. Rev. Nneoyi Egbe, has described Nigeria as a dead country.

He said the laws of the country were not working and its future was bleaker than anyone could imagine. He said the country needs to repent and halt its determination to self-destruction.

He disclosed this while flagging off the second session of the 12th synod held at the St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Ikot Effiong Nta in Calabar.

“The Nigerian nation is, in simple words, dead. We use this word deliberately because there is no other way to describe where we are now. Only the dead stay dead.

“The laws are not working, the leadership is on inoculation against reality, institutions are dead because the establishing laws have been jettisoned and people have pocketed the government and institutions.

“The outlook is bleaker than anyone could imagine. There is no sector of our national life that has not been taken over by this scourge of death. A couple of years ago, we pointed out that we were living a lie as a nation.

“We, as a church, have prayed and are still praying. However, we need to repent and drop our determination to self-destruct,” he said.

He said Nigerians should stop lying to themselves because it’s the only way to change false foundations and that justice is the first step to recover Nigeria.

Egbe, however, acknowledged the development efforts of the Cross River State Government, saying they were touched by his efforts and encouraged him to do more.
