Lagos State Government has defended the ongoing regeneration of Makoko and other parts of Lagos Island, saying the removal of structures particularly those under high-tension power lines, is aimed at protecting lives and property.

Speaking at a news conference in Alausa on Monday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Urban Renewal, Dr. Babatunde Olajide, said the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has consistently engaged stakeholders in Makoko and other communities slated for urban renewal.

Dr. Olajide explained that the regeneration programme is people-centred and guided by safety concerns, noting that structures built under high-tension cables pose grave risks to residents.

He added that the state government, in collaboration with development partners including the United Nations, is working on the Makoko Water City project to resettle affected residents.

He further stated that the Sanwo-Olu administration has previously demonstrated its commitment to humane resettlement, citing the relocation of sawmillers from Okobaba to Agbowa Timberville with adequate compensation.

According to him, the government is also redeveloping 21 markets on Lagos Island, including Pelewura, Pele-Onirin and Maboreje, while constructing about 3,000 shops at Alaba Rago for original traders without ethnic bias.

Dr. Olajide disclosed that plans are equally underway to relocate the popular Computer Village in Ikeja to Katangowa, in line with global best practices.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, cautioned against emotional and sentimental reactions to the Makoko issue.

He said while fundamental human rights must be respected, they should not infringe on the rights of others, particularly access to roads, safety and healthcare.

The briefing was also attended by the General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Mr. Saheed Animashaun, alongside other senior government officials.
