Abia State Government has said arrangements have reached advanced stage with the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), for the construction of a new Umuahia train station.

The state Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu disclosed this in Umuahia while briefing newsmen.

Kanu said the decision was a reaffirmation of the state government’s commitment to ensuring modern transportation, urban renewal and sustainable housing development.

He explained that the proposed train station will be located adjacent to the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and will feature a modern urban railway corridor integrated with retail and commercial activities, aimed at boosting economic growth within the axis.

He added that a network of access roads will also be developed to enhance connectivity to the facility and adjoining communities.

Kanu disclosed that the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) is intensifying efforts to relocate traders from the Isi Gate area of Umuahia to the newly developed Relief Market at Afara, adding that all arrangements for the relocation have been concluded.

He said the move was in line with the state government’s urban renewal and decongestion agenda, adding that compensation has been fully paid to affected landowners, while perimeter fencing of the market has been completed.

Giving an insight on the transport sector, Kanu said the construction of the ultra-modern Umuahia Central Bus Terminal is almost 100 percent completed and ready for commissioning.
