The first batch of Zamfara state pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia had successfully landed at the Gusau International Airport.
The airport at the weekend successfully received an aircraft conveying approximately 500 pilgrims, marking one of the largest passenger arrivals since the facility became operational.
“The successful landing and seamless handling of the passengers further attest to the airport’s growing capacity and readiness to support large-scale aviation operations,” a statement by the Commissioner of Works and Infrastructure, Lawal Barau Bungudu, said.
The successful operation also demonstrates the airport’s capability to facilitate religious, commercial, and economic activities, while enhancing connectivity between Zamfara State and other parts of the country and beyond, he said.
“The milestone serves as a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure projects that directly improve the lives of citizens and promote the overall development of Zamfara State,” according to the statement signed by Jamilu Bello, the ministry’s information officer.
The commissioner said this achievement reflects the determination of the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal to transform critical infrastructure and position Zamfara State as a hub for economic growth, investment, and improved transportation services.
The statement said Commissioner Bungudu, the ministry’s acting Permanent Secretary, Engr. Amiru Musa Anka, and Technical Officers from the ministry have continued to demonstrate exceptional commitment and dedication towards the development and operational readiness of the Gusau Airport.
“Their relentless supervision, strategic coordination, and commitment to quality infrastructure have contributed immensely to the remarkable progress achieved at the airport,” the statement said.
For the first time, Zamfara state pilgrims were airlifted to Saudi Arabia for 2026 Hajj from the Gusau Airport.
