Former World Cup record goalscorer, Miroslav Klose has praised Lionel Messi as “the best footballer of all time” after the Argentine captain surpassed his long-standing feat.

The Germany ex-international, who held the record with 16 goals until this summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, reacted after Messi netted a brace against Austria to reach 18 career World Cup goals.

Speaking to Süddeutsche Zeitung, Klose said he expected Messi to equal the record.

The former Bayern Munich and Lazio striker, now 48, said he knew the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was “no slouch”.

He said, “I’ve always said Messi is no slouch. For me, Lionel Messi is the best footballer of all time! Congratulations, champion.”

Messi grabbed a hat-trick in the defending champions’ 2026 World Cup opener against Algeria before adding a brace against Austria days later to take his tally at this tournament to five.

Argentine will play Jordan in their last group game on Saturday at AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas.
