Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has described insecurity as the greatest threat to the stability and development of Northern Nigeria, stressing that lasting peace and economic progress can only be achieved through sustained efforts to combat terrorism and other forms of criminality.

The governor made the remark in a statewide broadcast on Monday during the launch of the “Unite Against Terror” campaign in Gombe State.

He said the security challenges confronting the North-East and other parts of the region have continued to test the resilience of governments and citizens, warning that no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of insecurity.

“Insecurity remains the single most significant threat to the stability and development of Northern Nigeria. Without security, there can be no development; and without development, there can be no lasting peace,” Yahaya said.

The governor called for stronger collaboration among northern states, noting that criminal groups exploit porous interstate borders to evade security operations.

As Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Yahaya said he has championed efforts to establish the Northern States Security Trust Fund to enable states to pool resources and tackle shared security challenges more effectively.

He stressed that no state could defeat insecurity in isolation, urging governments to strengthen intelligence sharing and coordinate security responses across state boundaries.

Yahaya also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving Gombe’s security architecture through institutional reforms and strategic investments. He cited the establishment of the Ministry of Internal Security and Internal Affairs, the Gombe State Security, Traffic and Environmental Corps (GOSTEC), Operation Hattara, and support for local vigilante groups as key interventions that have enhanced safety in the state.

The governor commended security agencies for their sacrifices and urged them to embrace technology, intelligence-led operations and community engagement in addressing evolving security threats.

He also appealed to residents to support security agencies by remaining vigilant and promptly reporting suspicious activities, saying collective action remains essential to defeating terrorism and preserving peace across Northern Nigeria.
