Bosede Majekodunmi, a mother of one, is down, struck by kidney disease.
Since October 2016, the lady’s health has steadily deteriorated, with her family spending a lot of money to keep her alive. Every week, her family spends N120,000 on dialysis and drugs to sustain her.
Bosede’s daughter, Adebimpe Dipe, told the correspondent that the battle to save her mother started in October 2016 when she took ill. When her plight was first noticed, she was taken to hospital, where she was diagnosed with malaria and typhoid.
She recalled that after receiving treatment for two straight months, she was still looking frail. Subsequent diagnosis revealed that she had malaria but, unknown to everyone, she was suffering from kidney failure.
Adebimpe said that she began to panic when her mother’s condition worsened even when she had been taking her drugs faithfully. She stated that it got to a point that she had to take her mum to other places, where she did a series of tests that revealed that her blood count was low. Afterwards, further tests showed that she was suffering from kidney failure.
“She was admitted for one week on January 3 this year at a private hospital in Lagos. There, she had four sessions of dialysis and we spent over N700,000. A good part of the money was donated to us by good Samaritans. I thank God for the assistance; otherwise the story could have been different.
“Each session of dialysis cost N27,000 and she did that three times a week. She was also supposed to take a certain injection that helped to enrich her blood that cost N11,000 per dose in addition to post-dialysis test, which monitored her urea and creatine levels. That cost N2,000. On each session, we spent N40,000; this was to be done thrice a week, giving a total of N120,000.”
She said that when her mother was readmitted, the family began to spend a lot more money. By then, help was no longer coming from anywhere.
When the woman appeared better, Adebimpe said that she was discharged from hospital, making everyone happy.
However, Majekodunmi’s doctors recommended kidney transplant to be done abroad as a permanent solution.
The distraught daughter said that the least estimate from one of the three hospitals in India stood at N20 million. The amount would cover pre-operation investigations, transplant, drugs, post-transplant consultancy fee, transportation to and from India, accommodation, feeding and anti-rejection drugs for the patient for one year.
“I love my mother; I don’t want her to die now. But this is too much for me. I want to do all that I can to keep her alive.
“When her condition deteriorated in mid-September this year, I needed to take her to the hospital but I had no money. On September 19, I decided to create a gofundme account to seek public donations to aid her treatment,” Adebimpe said.
She lamented that her mother had been through a lot of complications, ranging from breath seizure to acute pain to unconsciousness.
She recalled a number of times when she had to rush the woman to hospital in the middle of the night, when her health assumed a frightening dimension: “One of the crises was on July 21, 2017. I took her for dialysis in the morning and I went to work. On my way back, I picked her but when we got home at about 9:30pm, she became restless and couldn’t breathe well. At 3am, I had to call a taxi to take her back to the hospital where she was immediately placed on oxygen. That was just one of the several unpleasant scenarios.
“I implore all Nigerians to help keep my mum alive. We are very grateful to those who have been donating to sustain her. With that, she has been having regular dialysis and looking better.”
