Veritas University emerged champions of the inaugural NBA REC University Tournament after defeating the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) 41-36 in the final at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Sports Centre.
The two-day tournament, held from August 7-8, brought together eight universities from across Nigeria, including UNILAG, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Veritas University, University of Ibadan (UI), Lagos State University (LASU), Lead City University, Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) and UNIABUJA.
Following the group-stage matches on the opening day, Veritas, ABUAD, UNIABUJA and UNILAG progressed to the semi-finals.
On the second day, UNILAG secured third place after defeating ABUAD 57-50, before Veritas University completed its impressive campaign by overcoming UNIABUJA in the championship game to lift the inaugural title.
ABUAD’s Anthony Chioke was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his outstanding performances throughout the competition.
Beyond the basketball action, the tournament featured a series of halftime activations, including fan giveaways, dance displays and musical performances by Nigerian artistes Taves and Samad, adding to the entertainment value of the event.

The NBA REC platform is the league’s recreational basketball initiative for players aged 18 and above, with a focus on enhancing university, community and adult basketball experiences.
The tournament was organised through the NBA’s collaboration with Future Concerns Nigeria Limited and Munch It.
The event attracted several prominent figures from sports, government, business and entertainment, including Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development Mobolaji Ogunlende; Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Sports Marketing, Onaopepo Adu; Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Vice President Babatunde Ogunade; Future Concerns Nigeria Limited COO Ernest Ugwuzor; Tolaram Events.
, Sponsorships and Partnerships Manager Frankie Ohwo; Aliko Dangote Foundation Projects Director Zakari Momodu; and Nigerian college basketball player Reuben Chinyelu of the Florida Gators.
Entertainment personalities Groovymono and Laycon were also among the notable guests.
