Uzodimma approves Degree programmes for Benjamin Uwajumogu College of Education

Governor Hope Uzodimma has approved a dual‑mandate policy for Benjamin Uwajumogu (State) College of Education, Isinweke, Ihitte Uboma, allowing the institution to award both degree certificates and the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE).

The governor speaking to newsmen at the event also directed the Imo State House of Assembly to domesticate the policy without delay and granted an automatic one‑year scholarship to every student admitted for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Dr. Chinyere Maryrose Nwachukwu,the institution’s acting Provost has hailed the decision as “a landmark achievement” that ushers the college into a new era of growth and global recognition.

“By approving the dual mandate and offering scholarships, Governor Uzodimma has inscribed his name not only in marble but in the hearts of all lovers of education,” she said, adding that the move will transform the college’s admission profile and elevate it from a solely NCE‑awarding body to a degree‑awarding institution.

Acting Registrar,Onyemechara James described the scholarship as “a demonstration of compassion and commitment to educational advancement,” noting it will boost enrollment and open doors for students who might otherwise lack tuition funds.

He explained that the dual‑mandate framework gives the college legal backing to confer degrees alongside NCE certificates, eliminating the perceived disparity between its graduates and university counterparts. “We are fully authorized, not operating through affiliation, and currently offer over 60 modern accredited courses supported by qualified staff,” he added.

Comrade Wilson Amandi , chairman of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) chapter in. His remarks expressed gratitude to the governor, pointing out that Benjamin Uwajumogu College is now the second college of education in the South‑East to receive such approval.

He highlighted additional gains under Uzodimma’s “Shared Prosperity” administration, including prompt salary payments, 13th‑month bonuses, staff motivation programs, modern teaching equipment, and substantial infrastructural upgrades. Amandi also commended Dr. Nwachukwu for her collaborative leadership and harmonious relations with staff unions and host communities.
