The Guest Lecturer at this year matriculation of Augustine University Ilara-Epe, Professor Anthony Akinwale has advised the matriculating students on dangers of calling education, a scam.
Speaking at the 9th matriculation ceremony 2023/2024 academic session on Thursday at the school Convocation Hall, Akinwale noted that such bad notion has harmful effects and can lead to a diminished society.
Discussing the topic: “Overcoming distractions to effective learning in contemporary Nigeria”, Akinwale emphasized the importance of identifying one’s objectives in life and differentiating between morally just and unjust means. He said the purpose of education, is not only to acquire knowledge but also to cultivate morals.
The Guest Lecturer while introducing the motto of Augustine University, “pro scientia et moribus,” which means for knowledge and morals said it addresses the misconception that education is a scam and highlighting the detrimental effects of being distracted from education.
Akinwale advised students to appreciate the importance of education and identify their goals in life to overcome distractions.
The University Lecturer and a Reverend Father also corrected a notion that the richest people in the world today are not educated.
According to him, Using the example of wealthy individuals without formal education, it emphasizes that they still rely on educated individuals to manage their businesses.
“If, as is often said, it is true that some of the richest people in the world today did not go through secondary or tertiary education, it is also true, and it must not be overlooked, that they hire those who have the best education to manage the affairs of their business empire”, he added.
Akinwale therefore advised the matriculating students to identify their life goal and focus on attaining it while considering the good of society. He emphasized the importance of discipline in managing distractions, both internal (such as pleasure-seeking) and external (such as economic or family issues).
Akinwale also mentioned the significance of good company and encouraged avoiding distractions, focusing on learning, and prioritizing spiritual well-being. He also urged the matriculating students to embark on their university education with the goal of transitioning from ignorance to learning.
Earlier in his welcome address, The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Christopher Odetunde acknowledged the significance of the matriculating ceremony as the official entry of students into the institution.
He described Augustine University as a young institution that upholds the traditions of Catholic higher education saying the university is focused on academic excellence, moral grounding, personal growth, and global perspective.
“The four faculties offer diverse programs, incorporating cutting-edge technology and modern pedagogical methods”, Odetunde added.
The VC emphasized the importance of academic integrity, personal growth beyond academics, and lifelong learning while he expressed gratitude to various stakeholders, including the university’s visioner, proprietor, board of trustees, governing council, and chancellor.
