The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has solicited for partnership with journalists in the northeast to shape the national agenda on child rights through their reportage to improve the wellbeing of children in the area.

Officer-in-Charge UNICEF Chief of Maiduguri Field Office, Joseph Senesie solicited for the partnership on Tuesday in Damaturu, Yobe State at a one-day media dialogue on Journalism Ethics and Child Rights Reporting.

“The society counts on the equality of your reports to shape the narrative of children in Nigeria’s northeast region,” Senesie said.

He urged journalists to conduct independent reports on the success and gaps in the interventions on child rights to shape the national agenda and children’s wellbeing.

He maintained journalism is not just a tool but the quality of the tool in making the society better. He said it was for this reason that the media dialogue was organized to provide refresher to journalists on ethical reportage of child rights and issues

Senesie said gaps exist in protection of child rights as nearly 2 million children are still out-of-school in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (BAY) states affected by over a decade insurgency.

He said UNICEF supported life-saving treatments of nearly 600,000 in acutely malnourished children in the northeast.

He promised that the global body will continue to work with journalists on children rights and wellbeing.
