United States President Donald Trump has described the suspect in Saturday night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as a “would-be assassin,” saying the man was heavily armed and managed to breach an outer security checkpoint before he was stopped.

The shooting occurred near the main screening area at the Washington Hilton, forcing a swift evacuation of senior officials, journalists and other guests attending the annual dinner.

Trump said the suspect “charged past a security checkpoint” before opening fire, triggering panic inside the venue.

“One law enforcement officer was shot, but thankfully the vest did its job,” he said, confirming that the officer survived the attack.

Secret Service agents quickly overpowered and arrested the suspect, while Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J. D. Vance and other high-profile guests were moved to safety.

“It could have been a very tragic night. Our security personnel acted with speed, courage and professionalism,” Trump said.

The incident has renewed concerns over security at major public events in Washington, especially those attended by top government officials, diplomats and members of the media.
