Nigerian woman nabbed with N40.9m cocaine in India

Police in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh have arrested a Nigerian woman, Emmanuel Joy, with 57.18 grammes of cocaine valued at more than Rs29 lakh (approximately N40.9m).

News18 Hindi reported Monday that Chandan Nagar police arrested Joy, a Lagos resident, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, after she was caught with a bag containing drugs at IT Park, Sinhasa.

Police alleged the suspect was travelling from Mumbai to Indore to supply cocaine.

The police were said to have stopped and engaged the woman after noticing her acting suspiciously.

However, she reportedly failed to answer questions posed to her satisfactorily, prompting a search.

The search allegedly led go the recovery of 57.18 grammes of cocaine concealed in a transparent bag.

The report said Joy arrived in India from Nigeria on August 14 on a seven-month business visa and was living in Bandra East, Mumbai, where she worked at a hair salon with her sister.

During interrogation, she reportedly told police she got the drugs at a low price and planned to sell at a higher price in Indore.

The police said a case has been registered against Joy under Sections 8 and 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Police also checked her passport, visa and immigration records.

She was subsequently charged before a court and remanded in prison custody.
