President Bola Tinubu has congratulated elder statesman and politician, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, on his 99th birthday on December 5, 2024.
President Tinubu acknowledged in a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information on Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President noted the profound impact that Yakassai has had on the development of Northern Nigeria and the nation at large. “Alhaji Yakassai’s unwavering dedication to public service and his relentless advocacy for the rights of citizens have made him a pivotal figure in our society,” the President stated.
Yakassai, a distinguished human rights activist and former Parliamentary Liaison Officer to President Shehu Shagari during Nigeria’s Second Republic, has been a vocal advocate for democratic governance and social justice. His insightful critiques and thoughtful advice have significantly shaped government policies over the years, earning him respect across political divides.
“His commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding within our society remains an enduring legacy,” President Tinubu remarked, emphasising Yakassai’s role in promoting peace and unity in Nigeria.
He also expressed his gratitude to Yakassai, who is a founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, for his steadfast support during the recent elections.
He acknowledged Yakassai’s belief in his vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria, stating, “Your support has been invaluable, and I assure you that I will remain committed to serving the Nigerian people and will not disappoint the trust you have placed in me.”
As part of his tribute, President Tinubu offered prayers for Yakassai’s continued good health and longevity. He expressed anticipation for celebrating Yakassai’s centennial birthday next year, highlighting the significance of such a milestone in the life of a revered elder statesman.
