The Zamfara State Government has inaugurated an anti-illegal mining committee comprising 13 experienced individuals, carefully selected to curb illegal mining. The government also vowed to regulate mining activities properly across the state to boost its economy for the benefit of everyone in the state.

The Executive Governor of Zamfara State, Dr Dauda Lawal, represented by the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, inaugurated the committee on Friday in Gusau, charging its members to remain committed to the rescue agenda of the administration.

A statement by Suleman Ahmad Tudu, Senior Special Assistant (Media), Office of the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, revealed that the committee is headed by the state’s Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Abdulrahman Tumbido, and has a broad membership drawn from security agencies, traditional institutions, and relevant federal and state government agencies.

Inaugurating the committee, Nakwada said the initiative was part of the state government’s efforts to assist the Federal Government in formalising the mining sector in the state.

The SSG charged the committee to work closely with security agencies and relevant regulatory and local authorities to identify locations where illegal mining was taking place and to profile the operators.

The committee will also ensure that even licensed companies comply with relevant laws and regulations, take adequate measures to prevent environmental degradation, and safeguard the safety and rights of host communities.

In his remarks, the committee’s Chairman, Hon. Tumbido, said it would work with reliable information, respect for the law, fairness and regard for the rights and livelihoods of the people.

He added that the committee would ensure that its efforts contributed to lasting security, environmental protection and sustainable development in the state.
