The Nasarawa State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected cultist and the recovery of an English -made pistol during a late-night patrol in Lafia, the state capital.

The arrest occurred at about 12:10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, during a routine patrol behind the A.A Rano Gas Plant in the Ombi 1 area of Lafia.

According to a press release issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, operatives from the Ombi 1 Division intercepted three young men clad in red clothing — a color often associated with cult groups.

“Upon sighting the police patrol team, the suspects took to their heels,” Nansel said. “The officers gave chase and successfully apprehended one of the suspects, identified as Hassan Isah Sidi, male, 38 years old, of Millionaires Quarters, Lafia.”

A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of one English-made pistol and a number of charms believed to be used for criminal activities. The police stated that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the two other suspects who fled the scene.

The Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, lauded the patrol team for their alertness and swift action.

“This arrest underscores our commitment to rid the state of cultism and related crimes,” Mohammed said. “We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all residents.”

The police urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

The case is currently under investigation, and further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
