The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Chapel, Lagos, is set to interrogate how the 2027 general elections and political decisions could shape Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, government revenue, investment and the wider economy.
The issues will take centre stage at the 2026 NUJ-NAN Press Week, scheduled for September 21 to 25, with journalists, policymakers, industry leaders, economists, political analysts, energy experts and other stakeholders expected to examine the economic implications of Nigeria’s political trajectory.
The five-day event will feature a major lecture and symposium on Wednesday, September 23, at 10:00 a.m. at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Complex, Eko Club Close, off Bode Thomas Road, Surulere, Lagos.
The symposium is themed: “2027 and Nigeria’s Future: Impact of Politics on Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry and Economy — The Role of the Media.”
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Mrs Vivian Ihechu, said the forum would provide a platform to examine how political developments and policy choices could influence the oil and gas sector and, by extension, Nigeria’s economic fortunes.
According to her, discussions will focus on the implications of politics for government revenue, investment, energy security, employment and overall economic performance.
“The media has a critical responsibility in shaping public understanding of these issues. Journalists must provide accurate, balanced and timely information while holding political leaders, public institutions and other stakeholders accountable,” Ihechu said.
She said the Press Week would also underscore the role of responsible journalism in strengthening democratic governance and advancing national development.
Secretary of the NUJ-NAN Chapel, Lagos, Adeyemi Adeleye, said the symposium theme was driven by the strategic importance of oil and gas to Nigeria’s economy and the need for the media to deepen public understanding of the sector ahead of the 2027 elections.
Adeleye said journalists must move beyond reporting political activities to interrogating how electoral outcomes, government policies and political decisions could affect critical sectors of the economy.

“The 2027 elections will have implications for the direction of economic policies and the management of critical sectors such as oil and gas. The media therefore has a responsibility to deepen public understanding of these issues and ensure that political and economic debates are based on facts,” he said.
He said the symposium would attract industry leaders, political analysts, economists, financial experts, power-sector professionals, security agencies, legislators, academics, students, media practitioners and members of the public.
The Press Week will open on Monday, September 21, with a health walk from Yaba College of Technology to the NAN premises, under the theme, “Stride Towards Healthier Workers.” The opening programme will also feature a free medical check-up and medical outreach.
Tuesday, September 22, will be observed as Cultural Day with the theme, “Our Culture, Our Pride.” Activities will include a Kuti Family appearance as part of the celebrations around Felabration, as well as a performance by Fuji music maestro, Dr Adewale Ayuba.
The programme will also feature visits to orphanages and elderly care homes, among other activities aimed at promoting social responsibility and community engagement.
The organisers said the Press Week was designed to strengthen professional bonds among journalists and foster meaningful engagement between the media, government, businesses and other sectors of society.
Ihechu and Adeleye called on media organisations, government institutions, corporate bodies, industry stakeholders and members of the public to support and participate in the programmes.
They said the event would reinforce the NUJ-NAN Chapel’s commitment to professional journalism, informed public discourse, accountability, democratic governance and sustainable national development.
