The proposal for a State police has excited an Igbo group, Igbodike Movement, which has promised its full support to President Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection in 2027, if it is realized.
National Coordinator of the group, Peter Nwankwo, motivated by the proposal, has vowed the group’s full support to the President’s aspiration, promising to lead a one million match in the South East to ensure a massive vote for him.
Nwankwo in a statement made available to journalists in Owerri emphasized that the creation of the State police would be a landmark achievement for the president, who he said met heavy security challenges on assumption of office.

He expressed optimism that its establishment would help to improve the overall security challenges in the country, thereby allowing states to address the challenges in their jurisdictions.
The read in part: “This localized approach to policing will lead to quick response and more effective crime prevention efforts.
“The state police establishment will enhance community relations. State police forces will have better relationships with the communities they serve, as they will be more familiar with the local environment and culture. This can help to build trust between law enforcement and the public, leading to more effective crime prevention and resolution.
“State police forces can also allocate resources based on the specific needs of their own communities, rather than being dependent on centralized decision-making from the Police Headquarters in Abuja. This can lead to more efficient use of resources and better-targeted law enforcement efforts.”
Nwankwo said that the establishment of state police will reduce political interference in law enforcement activities at the state level. This can help to improve the independence and effectiveness of state police forces, leading to better overall security outcomes.
