Gov of Abia, Alex Otti

By Sunday Ani

Stakeholders from different political parties as well as traditional rulers, the clerics and leaders from Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State have passed a vote of confidence in the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, following his infrastructural development across all sectors of the state. This is the outcome of an enlarged stakeholders meeting last week at the council  headquarters in Akwete, where they affirmed their total support for the governor to complete his good works in the state.

After exhaustive deliberations on Otti’s administration in the last two years and three months, the people expressed satisfaction, saying that by the end of his first tenure in office, the state would have witnessed unprecedented infrastructural turnaround never witnessed since the creation of the state.

The motion for the vote of confidence was moved by Ken Okere, a two-term commissioner at the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC). He was  seconded by Chief Israel Nwahunanya who is also a former local government chairman of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) for many years in the council.

They commended the Governor for the ongoing construction of both the Ohanku and the Obohia roads in Aba, and appealed to the Governor to ensure that both roads were not abandoned but terminate at the aforementioned towns in Ukwa East Local Government Area to open up the area and give the people a sense of belonging in the current government.

Earlier in his opening remark, Chairman of Ukwa East  Local Government Area,  Chibunna Akara enumerated various developmental strides already achieved by the state government and the council since the inception of his administration in November last year.

He recalled that his administration had, on assumption of office, embarked on various road grading and rehabilitation, including the renovation of various buildings within the council.

He stated that the council also sponsored many students in the last junior and senior  secondary schools WAEC examinations while over 30 youths have been trained in digital skill acquisitions and empowered to be on their own.

He noted that additional 50 youths would soon be shortlisted for the next tranche of the programme, which remains an ongoing programme of the administration to ensure that the youths are gainfully engaged.

He also stated that the local government has enjoyed peace since the inception of the present administration, following a proactive synergy adopted with the security agencies and the local vigilante organisations.

The council boss also disclosed that there was an ongoing construction of solar water projects across the 10 electoral wards of the council with six of them already completed.

He told the people that the state government had marked 20 schools for reconstruction across the 10 wards, including the construction of an ultra modern high court in Akwete, and the ongoing construction and renovation of 10 health centres across the 10 wards.

He called on the people to continue to support Otti’s administration, stressing that he meant well for the council and the entire state.

The people decried the lack of electricity in the area as well as boundary challenges and called on the council chairman to relay their challenges to the governor for positive response.

They, however, praised Akara for the peace that the local government has enjoyed since he became the chairman and urged him to sustain his strategy.

They also agreed to set up different committees to look into various challenges of the council and proffer solutions that would positively impact on the lives of the people of the area.

Also, the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who hails from the area, assured the people that construction on Obohia and Ohanku roads that is currently ongoing would be completed by the state government and that both roads would terminate at Ukwa East Local Government Area.

He also disclosed that the state government would soon embark on another road that would cut across many other villages in the council through RAMP. He added that the state government had also concluded plans to commence the construction of a general hospital at Ohanku village.

He assured the people that the council would be adequately carried along in the development programmes of Gov Otti, whom he described as caring and sensitive to the plight of the people of the state.

Speakers at the occasion, including Lewis Obianyi, representing Ukwa East state constituency in the State House of Assembly,  Eze Ikeagwuchi Ekeke, Dr. Ngozi Nwagbara, immediate past Mayor of the council and currently a Commissioner at the Local Government Service Commission,  Dr. Chika Emuchay, former Commissioner for Health in the State, Special Adviser to the Governor, Mrs Matilda Anyamele, and Chief Uche Sunday Aja, a former Transition Committee Chairman of the council.

Chief Aja commended Akara for convening such a high profile gathering of stakeholders, irrespective of their political affiliations, saying that it was the first of its kind in the council.

He urged him to sustain the programme so that the people would always meet to rub minds for the general well-being and development of the council.
