From Shafa’atu Suleiman, Sokoto
Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has called on traditional rulers, religious clerics, health professionals and community leaders to support the ongoing measles-rubella vaccination campaign across Sokoto State.
The governor made the appeal during the official flag-off of the state’s sensitisation campaign on the Measles-Rubella vaccine, held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Lodge, Sokoto.
He said the collective involvement of key stakeholders was vital to achieving the desired outcome of the immunisation exercise, which targets children that are vulnerable to life-threatening infections.
“Collaboration is essential. This campaign will only succeed if all hands are on deck to mobilise communities and ensure that no child is left behind”
In his remarks, the state Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammad Gobir, described measles and rubella as highly contagious diseases that could lead to serious health complications, including deafness, blindness, heart defects, brain damage and even death in children.
He, however, reassured the public that the measles-rubella vaccine is both safe and effective, and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to investing in immunisation programmes and improving access to essential healthcare services.
“We will continue to prioritise immunisation because the health of our children determines the strength of our future”
He commended the development partners for their ongoing support in strengthening healthcare delivery in the state.
Speaking at the event, the wife of the Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Fatima Ahmed Aliyu, urged the wives of local government chairmen to lead awareness campaigns in their respective communities. She said such efforts would help ensure that all eligible children receive the vaccine.
“Healthy children today mean healthier leaders tomorrow,” she said.
In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar Wurno, expressed appreciation to the state government for its continued support.
He noted that the ministry has recorded significant progress in several health interventions due to the administration’s backing.
A major highlight of the event was the formal signing of an agreement between the Sokoto State Government and the North-West Zonal Coordinator of C-WINS, a key partner in the campaign.
