The Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the state has recorded another significant improvement in its fiscal performance, alongside visible improvements in the health sector, education, infrastructure, and governance, with the state emerging among the top-performing states in the 2026 BudgIT State of States Report, covering 2017–2025.
This is as the state has concluded arrangements to construct a link road across the railway station in the state capital.
Kanu, who disclosed this in Umuahia during a chat with newsmen, noted that the BudgIT 2026 Report ranked Abia second in aggregate revenue growth, third in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) growth, first in total expenditure growth, capital expenditure growth and personnel expenditure growth.
The Commissioner said the performance reflected the administration’s prudent and strategic management of public resources.
“Abia State’s combination of revenue mobilisation, capital investment expansion and administrative cost restraint points to a story of adroit and prudent management of resources,” Prince Kanu stated.
He noted that the BudgIT assessment was consistent with the findings of the Philips Consulting State Performance Index, which also identified Abia as one of the fastest-improving states in the country in its recent report.
Kanu, however, stated that the state government was more concerned with delivering tangible improvements in the lives of citizens than competing or comparing itself with other states.

Meanwhile, the Abia Government said it would soon commence the construction of a 200-metre road extension that stretches from Bende Road junction by Umuwaya and the Post Office Tower through the railway crossing to the First Bank axis and Ibiam Road.
Kanu said this was part of efforts by the government to improve the state’s transport ecosystem.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the state government had equally commenced the renovation of one of the existing structures within the railway station to enable the relocation of the present police post.
He said the government would also reconstruct the abandoned road linking First Bank to the Keystone and FCMB banks area.
“Construction of the road will commence soon with the design and scoping of the road. Work has also commenced on the renovation and retrofitting of one of the existing structures within the railway station, with a view to relocating the present police post to another place.”
“In accordance with the state government’s agenda of raising the state’s transport sector to 21st century standards, we recently signed an MOU with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to construct a 200-meter road extension that stretches from Bende Road, junction by the Post Office Tower, through the railway crossing to the First Bank and Akanu Ibiam Road areas,” Kanu stated.
