The Abia State Government said it will this month distribute 3.03 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) worth over N1bn to Abians and residents across the 17 local government areas of the state.
Disclosing this in Umuahia, Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the project, which is being carried out in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme, was aimed at reducing the malaria burden and associated deaths.
“Abia State Government through the Ministry of Health is collaborating with the National Malaria Elimination Programme on an ITN campaign project to distribute 3,000,030 Insecticide Treated Nets worth over N1bn Naira”.
He said the campaign, scheduled for this month, was particularly significant as Abia had not conducted a mass ITN distribution campaign since 2010.

He announced that the Community Supported Health Insurance Programme of the Ministry of Health is gaining momentum, with the upcoming formal launch of the scheme for Abiriba Community scheduled for September 16.
According to him, 1,000 individuals of Abiriba community will be enrolled in the health insurance programme courtesy of the Abiriba Improvement Union, and urged other community development unions across the state to emulate and replicate the same gesture for members of their communities.
Kanu informed that the recruitment portal for the employment of additional medical personnel for the state’s medical facilities is still open for medical consultants, medical officers and dental officers.
He gladly announced that there were no cases of diseases of public health importance in the state within the period under review.
