Bukola

In this exclusive interview, gospel musician Bukola Olayinka discusses her vision to transform the gospel music landscape by utilizing cutting-edge methods that inspire optimism, hope, and faith.

Briefly introduce yourself

My name is Bukola Olayinka. I am a lover of God and passionate about leading people to His presence. As a graduate of computer science with a Masters in International Management, I have worked in various sections of the banking industry. I currently serve in the music department of my church, amongst other things. I am married to Chris Oyewole Olayinka and we are blessed with 3 children.

Tell us about your journey into music

For as long as I can remember, I started singing in primary school, always sang when I had the opportunity to, and just served in the capacity I could with my gifts in school and translated that into church. I started writing songs when I was in NYSC in 2001. I remember recording a song with NCCF then and just keeping at it until now.

How long have you been into music?

I have been into music for over two decades.

How do you intend to change the Nigerian gospel music industry?

Three ways I intend to bring change to Nigerian gospel music are:

  • Innovation: Bring fresh and innovative elements to my music, incorporating diverse styles and production techniques that resonate with a broad audience.
  • Lyrical Depth: Focus on meaningful and relatable lyrics that convey messages of hope, faith, and positivity, addressing contemporary issues.
  • Collaborations: Collaborate with fellow artists, producers, and other industry professionals to create a network and amplify your impact.

How would you rate Nigerian gospel music now?

Nigerian gospel music has been highly regarded globally for its vibrant and diverse styles, powerful vocals, and rich lyrical content. It continues to evolve and influence the global gospel music scene

With a lot of men fully in charge, how do you intend to break the jinx?

I intend to break into the Nigerian music industry with a lot of men fully in charge, focusing on the following areas:

  • Unique Voice and Style: Keep developing a distinctive voice and musical style that set me apart. Embrace my uniqueness and bring a fresh perspective to the genre.
  • Exceptional Talent: Focus on honing my musical skills and delivering exceptional performances. Strive for excellence in my vocals, songwriting, and overall presentation.
  • Networking: Build relationships with key figures in the gospel music industry. Attend events and collaborate with established artists, producers, and industry professionals to expand my network.

What kind of music are you into?

I am a gospel artist, and my focus is on creating uplifting and inspirational music that reflects my faith.

What can you say about gospel musicians performing at secular events?

Performing at secular events as a gospel artist is a personal decision that varies based on individual beliefs and convictions. I would, however, ensure that whatever the event, I stay true to my values and maintain the integrity of my gospel message. I am cautious not to compromise my beliefs for the sake of the event. I would also see it as an avenue to reach others with the message of the gospel.

How supportive has your family been towards your chosen career?

My family is very supportive. They know this is what I am called to do and are behind me 1 00 percent of the way.

How do you cope with both your family/work and music?

Balancing family, work, and a music career requires effective time management and prioritization. I understand my responsibilities and priorities and delegate where necessary, and I am flexible and adaptable to finding a balance in all I need to do.

What do you think about paying gospel artists after ministration?

Ultimately, the decision to pay gospel artists after a ministration is a personal and organizational choice. It’s essential for all parties involved to have open conversations about expectations and to respect each other’s decisions.

Your songs have been playing on some FM stations, when are we expecting your album to hit the market?

Well, I am still working on that. Right now, my songs are on all the digital platforms available, and I am looking at having a full album out by next year.

What are your challenges?

Basically, standing out and gaining recognition among the numerous talented artists in the industry, as well as access to resources, promotion, and opportunities, is another challenge.

Who are your role models?
My role models are Sinach and Cece Winans. They are both gifted artists who carry themselves with a lot of grace and humility.

Any advice for upcoming gospel artists like you?

Well, I will say, stay true to your calling and your uniqueness. Keep working out your gifts and encouraging yourself as you preserve them. Rome, they say, was not built in a day, so consistency is also very crucial.
