Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Kolapo Olusola, and Vice Chancellor of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Samuel Bandele, who are professors of Building Technology and Mathematics respectively, have advised students to shun acts that could acts that could destroy their future. They listed such acts as cultism, idleness, indiscipline and criminalities.
Recalling that Governor Ayodele Fayose picked him as his running mate owing to his intellectual competence and honesty, Olusola urged the students to ensure that they develop their intellectual capacity rather than wasting their youthful energies in frivolities.
Speaking in Ado Ekiti at the Ekiti State Students’ Summit 2017, organized by the Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU), the deputy governor said the country may witness a dire consequences of allowing youths to be relegated without recognition in terms of employments and policy-making processes if proper steps are not taken.
He spoke on the theme: Youthfulness and Usefulness. Olusola was an Associate Professor of Building Technology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife before his nomination as Fayose’s deputy:
“Governor Fayose and the PDP had earlier been considering someone, but they said he was not intellectually capable. But when my name was presented to the party and I was interviewed, they said I was qualified intellectually and morally. You must strive hard in life to have good and sound education.”
He expressed regret at how the glories of some students were being cut short due to involvement in cultism, robbery, prostitution and other sharp practices:
“Will your dreams and aspirations be buried, will you leave this earth fulfilled? The choice is yours. As a youth, you are either an achiever or a leader or spectator who have no focus or direction in life. People with no future ambition.
“Some politicians deceive you and call you leaders of tomorrow without giving you the change to be active in the political process. Our governor is giving change to the youths to participate in the democratic process but people are criticizing him.
“When a society refuses to acknowledge the role of the younger generation and pretentiously call hem leaders of tomorrow. Take care of your attitude. It matters a lot. Your altitude determines your altitude.
“You are useful to yourself when your decision leads to your development, growth and advancement in life. Success starts from your mind.”
Awards were given to a member of the State House of Assembly, Samuel Omotoso; Commissioner for Agriculture, Kehinde Odebunmi; Provost, College of Science and Technology, Ijero-Ekiti and Dr. Aarinola Olaiya. FESSU’s president, Peter Idowu Adewumi, said Ekiti “is greatly endowed with productive youths who can do the state proud if their potentials are harnessed.
He praised government for paying attention to the issue of bursary and scholarship, saying the anti-cultism law will help in redirecting the psyche of bad students and make them toe the path of honour and dignity.
Bandele advised the students against misguided and unscrupulous acts: “With this anti-cultism law,
I know youths will come to their senses because no one will want to die by hanging.
“There is every reason for students to be focused, youths are the leaders of tomorrow. Make use of your God endowed energy in the most productive way. Don’t indulge in frivolities, be focused and have a target. If you have these qualities, sky remains your starting point.”
