Vice President Kashim Shettima launched the Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP) on Tuesday at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, aiming to tackle unemployment and equip Nigerians with skills for the global economy. The initiative targets 2.5 million direct and indirect jobs annually.
Shettima, in a statement by his media aide Stanley Nkwocha, said LEEP fulfils President Bola Tinubu’s promise to build a workforce where every Nigerian can thrive.
“Machines are replacing hands, artificial intelligence is challenging intellects, and traditional job structures are evolving. Yet, within this uncertainty lies opportunity, if only we are bold enough to sail it,” he said, acknowledging technological disruptions but stressing their potential.
He urged collaboration among the private sector, civil society, trade unions, and global partners. “This is a collective assignment. Together, we can empower our workforce and strengthen our economy,” he added.
Minister of State for Labour and Employment Nkeiruka Onyejeocha outlined LEEP’s structure, highlighting digital literacy, vocational training, and entrepreneurship.
“Through the LEEP Digital Nomads pillar, we will nurture the talents of our youth to access global income streams by enhancing their digital literacy,” she said.
Other components include the Vocational and Entrepreneurship Programme (VEP), annual job fairs, and upgraded learning spaces for apprenticeships and incubators.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma pledged state governors’ support, stating, “If religiously implemented, this programme will significantly impact our economy by reducing unemployment and criminality while engaging citizens productively.”
International Labour Organisation (ILO) Country Director Vanessa Phala called LEEP a turning point for Nigerian youths.
“This marks a critical moment for our youths to contribute meaningfully to national development,” she said.
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero emphasised sustainable jobs. “I pray this initiative creates jobs that offer decent pay and security,” he said.
National Directorate of Employment (NDE) Director General Silas Agara described LEEP as aligned with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on employability skills and economic growth.
LEEP’s emphasis on innovation, technology, and inclusivity across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones positions it as a key step toward reducing unemployment and empowering citizens globally.
