The Ogun State Government has imposed a ban on street trading around the Sango Tollgate and demolished shanties and temporary structures along the Ogun–Lagos border to curb frequent accidents in the area.
The exercise, conducted on Tuesday, targeted illegal structures erected on road setbacks and under the bridge, which authorities say have contributed to traffic hazards and fatalities.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Kafayat Lawal, who led the operation, said the demolition followed several warnings and notices issued to traders occupying the area.
She noted that the government had provided an alternative trading location at Plaza Road in Sango, urging affected traders to relocate and comply with regulations.
According to Lawal, the move is aimed at eliminating street trading activities that often result in avoidable deaths and permanent injuries around Sango Tollgate.
“The exercise will free the Tollgate and Under bridge street trading which frequently leads to loss of life when there are mishaps around the area which has become source of worry to the state government and well-meaning Nigerians.
“The state government will therefore not fold its hands and allow street trading in the Tollgate area which has led to avoidable loss of life and permanent disabilities due to its danger.”
She warned that anyone found returning to trade at the tollgate or under the bridge would face legal consequences, stressing that enforcement would be sustained to ensure compliance.
