Fine art photographer Samson Oriyomi Yusuf has unveiled a new Cultural Heritage Portrait Series documenting the visual identities of Nigeria’s three major ethnic groups Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa in a body of work that underscores the importance of cultural preservation through contemporary photography.
The 2024 series, which has drawn attention within Nigeria’s creative community, presents carefully staged portraiture that highlights traditional attire, posture, symbolism and generational memory. According to Yusuf, the project was designed as both artistic expression and cultural documentation.
“Culture is evolving rapidly,” Yusuf said. “If we do not intentionally archive our visual identities, we risk losing nuance. This series is my contribution to preserving what defines us.”
